Течение в американской живописи, сложившееся к 1940 и отражающее элементы различных стилей и школ: экспрессионизма, абстракционизма, сюрреализма, но полностью отвергающее реализм. Основано на теории свободного использования цвета, линий, форм и текстуры для придания большей экспрессии идеям художника. Может рассматриваться как отражение философии экзистенциализма в живописи. Наиболее видными представителями абстрактного экспрессионизма в США являются художники Дж. Поллок [Pollock, Jackson], М. Ротко [Rothko, Mark], Ф. Клайн [Kline, Franz J.], В. де Кунинг [De Kooning, Willem], А. Горки [Gorky, Arshile], А. Готтлиб [Gottlieb, Adolph], а также художественные критики Г. Розенберг [Rosenberg, Harold] и К. Гринберг [Greenberg, Clement].
